Hailing from Portugal, the Cavaquinho is a member of the 'small guitar' family and is believed to be the precursor to the - much more common - ukulele. Because of its small and lightweight form factor the Cavaquinho travelled the world resulting in many evolutions and variations of the instrument in order to integrate it with local cultures and musical traditions. Today it can most commonly be found, in its true form, in South America. The cavaquinho is an incredibly bright sounding instrument and much louder than its size suggests. It is traditionally played finger-style but it is also very common to play solo and lead lines with something akin to a guitar pick.
